bougainvillea

BOUGAINVILLEA

The Bougainvillea is another one of my favorite plants. Although Bougainvillea can be quite controversial due to sharp thorns it is one of the most colorful plants in the landscape.

CAESALPINIA MEXICANA

CAESALPINIA MEXICANA

More commonly known as the Mexican Bird of Paradise and sometimes called the Yellow Bird of Paradise. This is another outstanding plant for any desert landscape.

Palo Verde

PALO VERDE

The Palo Verde comes in several different species and new hybrid varieties. My favorite is the Cercidium Preacox or the Sonoran Palo Verde.

Irrigation Tips

A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER OVER A LONG AMOUNT OF TIME

Drip irrigation is ideal for Arizona's desert climate.  The key to drip irrigation is: a small amount of water over a long amount of time.  Applying water slowly to each plant is a very efficient way to water.  This not only places the water where it is needed to promote healthy growth it also reduces evaporation of surface water.  By applying the water to only the area it is needed promotes less weed growth.

IMITATE NATURE

Have you ever noticed how the desert responds to a summer thunder shower?  This can be achieved by imitating nature with your irrigation system.  Traditionally May and June are our hottest and driest months.  In addition to regular watering a deep soaking a couple weeks apart will eliminate plant stress, promote growth and maybe even encourage flowering.  Texas Sage and Creosote respond especially well to deep watering.

ANTI-SYPHON VALVES

Isolating your irrigation system from your house is very important.  A back flow prevention device keeps potential harmful irrigation water from siphoning back into your house and contaminating the potable water.   An anti-siphon valve can also be a shut off valve in the event your irrigation system needs repair.

POTTED PLANTS

Emitters come in many different styles.  They all are rated in gallons or liters per hour.  Starting at ½ gallon/hour and going to 20gph.  Adding an adjustable emitter to your container plants is an easy way to insure regular watering.  It is also very important that your container drains.

LAWN SPRINKLERS

Sprinkler location is important for good even coverage.  Locate sprays in the corner of a side walk and aim it towards the grass for the best coverage.
